Sacrifice

We are home this week. There is no school, dance, band, piano. It’s all closed. No one is thrilled, especially not my teenagers.

Bottom line? We have forgotten how to sacrifice, and that makes social distancing so very difficult.

One of my uncles grew up during the Great Depression. He had a job, and all his money earned was given to the family. He sacrificed his hard earned money for something bigger than himself.

In a conversation yesterday, one of my kids was lamenting about the social isolation.

“I want to hang out with my friends. It’s not a big deal! None of us is going to die!”

Well, that’s most likely true when you look at the death rate of this virus. But somebody dies. And that somebody is why we sacrifice our school, our time together, our church services, all of it.

Remember, we have a duty to love and care for each other. We have to consider everyone, not just the people we know. We need to sacrifice things we want right now for the greater good. Teach your kids about sacrifice. Then live it yourself.
