A little humor
Brian and I recently celebrated 22 years of marriage. We went away for the weekend to celebrate, and we talked and reminisced and laughed. So many memories.
My parents knew we were a good match. They gave me a card on my wedding day that showed a picture of the bride and groom, each wearing a boxing glove behind their backs. Haha. It was perfect.
Our marriage, however, is not perfect. We have had a great many fights over things big and small. We have suffered unimaginable heartbreaks and tons of blessings along the way.
Humor is the key.
In August of 2000, we were feeling disappointed. Brian had not been accepted to any medical schools, Samantha was 4 months old, and we didn’t know what to do next. The unknowns were overpowering.
In a matter of days, we heard that Brian had been accepted into USC medical school, loaded all of our things in a truck, and moved in with his parents in Southern California. It was a whirlwind.
The first day of medical school arrived. Brian turned to me and asked,
“What should I wear?”
I didn’t know. Everything was happening so fast, and there were too many decisions.
“My dad always wore a suit.”
It was true. My dad was a doctor and I never saw him leave the house without a suit on...at least a shirt and tie and sport coat. It was his uniform.
Brian took my advice and suited up. He got in our little car and drove away. I waited anxiously at home until he returned, hopeful that everything went well. ( Clearly, this occurred before cell phones. )
Well, as you can imagine, Brian walked into the lecture hall and into a sea of students wearing shorts and t-shirts.
Whoops.
As the day went on, he got assigned a desk. He took advantage of the moment and slipped off his tie, put his suit coat over his chair and rolled up his sleeves to casual himself up.
Thankfully, the medical school took pictures that day, so he could attribute his dressy attire to that. Embarrassed, he came home and told me about his first day.
Whoops.
I felt badly. What was I thinking? C’mon! Who wears a suit to school?! Despite feeling badly, I still laughed. I have laughed and laughed and laughed about that day. And Brian? He laughs right along with me.
Seeing the humor in it has helped us both. When ridiculous things happen, even when I was the cause of those ridiculous things...a little humor goes a long way.
